In a study analyzing over 240 cases of endophthalmitis treated between 2012 and 2022, the researchers found that certain bacteria, such as Streptococcus and Enterococcus species, are far more aggressive and likely to cause severe vision loss and complications. This discovery challenges the traditional approach of treating endophthalmitis based solely on visual acuity at diagnosis. Instead, it emphasizes the importance of identifying the specific organism causing the infection to enable faster and more personalized treatment decisions.
Conrady highlights the need for faster diagnostic tools to identify dangerous bacteria promptly, as well as further research to understand the most effective treatment approaches for different infection types.
